Donkey Welfare

Donkeys have been used in Cyprus for centuries as a working animal and are a large part of the history of the island.

Many of the old practices of donkey care are still used today and we have heard many interesting and fascinating stories from elderly owners.

Just as with human medicine, nutrition and lifestyle changes, the use of donkeys and their requirements for good health have changed over the years. With over forty years experience of The Donkey Sanctuary UK, including numerous areas of research, we now have a better understanding of the needs of donkeys to ensure they have a healthy life. However, variations in climate, terrain, facilities and culture can affect any advice given and this is always taken into consideration.

We offer support and recommendations to owners and anyone who contacts us wanting to know about donkey care. Any welfare concerns received will be investigated and information is provided to educate people about donkey health and welfare.

Many of the commercial sites that have donkeys welcome us to visit their premises which we endeavour to do annually.
