New arrivals
Submitted by Jenifer Tucker on Mon, 28/11/2011 - 12:47Fortunately, due to our Outreach Programme and more and more donkey owners calling us for advice, we haven’t had any abandoned donkeys this year. Now that all donkeys have to be microchipped, we even tracked the owner of a donkey found wandering near the sanctuary!
Consequently, we tend to get donkeys who whose owners no longer want or cannot look after them.
Open day success
Submitted by Jenifer Tucker on Mon, 28/11/2011 - 12:09On 16th October 2011 we held our first Open Day at Vouni. Until moving some of the donkeys to our Holding Bases, we’ve not had room to have one before, and as we have converted an unused barn into a Museum and Education Centre, thought it would be an ideal opportunity to combine the opening with an Open Day.
We managed to get some great prizes donated from local businesses, had a Name the Donkey competition for our Museum artificial donkey and several games for adults and children. The opening of the Museum was done by Mr Yiorgos Perdikis, MP for the Green Party, who also kindly presented us with a cheque for €800!
Dear Serkas ‘volunteered’ himself for the Guess the Weight of the Donkey Competition! We had weighed him on our special equine weigh scales first. Then we adorned him with a hat as well as a blanket on his back with Guess My Weight in English on one side and Greek on the other. He loved getting all of the attention and preferred to stand still and let everyone come to him rather than the other way around!
Farewell to some of our friends
Submitted by Jenifer Tucker on Mon, 28/11/2011 - 12:02Narky and Lofou
Dear Narky hit the 50 year milestone earlier this year and was doing well despite a problem with his lungs. He developed the same problem as Wallis had had and we used the same treatment – a baby nebuliser - and did our best to keep him out of extreme heat and dust which obviously is not easy here. However, as the summer progressed, it became apparent that his breathing was deteriorating and he was struggling to breathe, even with medication. It was very stressful for him and he was unable to enjoy life. After much consideration we quietly put him to sleep last October.
Poor Lofou, who had reached the ripe old age of 48, suddenly deteriorated in health, and after various veterinary tests, was found to have liver failure. Unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for him and rather than let him suffer, we decided to say goodbye to him.
Farewell to a dear friend and co-worker
Submitted by Jenifer Tucker on Mon, 28/11/2011 - 11:50A tragic event this year was the death in July of our much loved co-worker Frank Lee. Frank had been helping us for over two years at Vouni and lived for ‘his donkeys’. Frank adored being with all of them, in particular Hercules and Chloe, who had a special place in his heart.
Everyone who knew Frank said they could always tell when he was going to be working at Vouni as his face would light up and he had a spring in his step. Frank’s family, who live in the UK, all said that he talked about little else other than the donkeys when he spoke to them on the phone and that his life revolved around mucking out, grooming and taking donkeys for walks! With a great sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye, Frank is sorely missed by so many people.
A promise kept
Submitted by Jenifer Tucker on Mon, 28/11/2011 - 11:29Many years ago, a lady called Mrs Payne had been heard about the plight of the abandoned donkeys in Cyprus at a presentation given to the Women’s Corona Society, Paphos, by Mary Skinner, founder of Friends of the Cyprus Donkey. Mrs Payne made a promise to remember the donkeys in her will.
in July this year we received call from local author, Anne Rapley, who informed us that Mrs Payne had passed away and had left us a substantial amount of money.
Name the donkey competition - Results
Submitted by Evi Stefanou on Mon, 24/10/2011 - 14:09Well ,we would like to say a huge big thank you to all those who participated in this wonderful game! We had a very good response and we now have a winner!
The name of our Museum & Educational Centre donkey is Ranger, which was suggested by a very kind lady in Salisbury, UK. She has been sent a lifetime adoption certificate of Ranger along with a red name collar which includes Ranger's and her name on it! Ranger is now wearing an identical one around his neck.

MP, Mr Yiorgos Perdikis of Nicosia Green Party, gave us the honour of opening the Centre and also kindly donated €800 as a donation towards our work here in Cyprus.

Name the donkey competition
Submitted by Evi Stefanou on Thu, 16/06/2011 - 08:45Remember our ''Name the donkey Competition''?! Well after a big response from people, we have decided to extend the date that it will end. We will be running the competition for the whole summer and we will announce the results at the end of September 2011 as we are also hoping to hold an open day for our Education & Museum Centre at that same time.
Can anyone help us please?
Submitted by Evi Stefanou on Tue, 17/05/2011 - 14:34Our dear old Rice horse trailer is still sound and working but in desperate need of some TLC (the picture makes it look better than it is!!).
We wondered if there was anyone out there who could give it a makeover with a new coat of paint. We don’t have the money to pay a garage but could probably pay for the paint.
If there is a kind hearted person out there we really would appreciate it.
If you can help us please email us at info@donkeysanctuarycyprus.org or ring our office Mon - Fri 2594 4151.
