The name of our Museum & Educational Centre donkey is Ranger, which was suggested by a very kind lady in Salisbury, UK. She has been sent a lifetime adoption certificate of Ranger along with a red name collar which includes Ranger's and her name on it! Ranger is now wearing an identical one around his neck.

All for our wonderful donkeys!!!
Little and large?!
A couple of weeks after Jimmy arrived we had a desperate call from the friend of an elderly owner. The owner had gone completely blind after several years of problems and was no longer to look after her beloved donkey that she used for work.
The friend and a few other people had been looking after the donkey for her and asked if we could take him. Of course we said we would and off we went to collect him. The one proviso was that we named the donkey Demos after the owner’s husband – no problem.
A well loved donkey arrives
Meet Jimmy! OK so he has his ears facing backwards, but despite taking lots of photos he would only pick them up after the camera clicked!! You’ve read many stories of very sad or even horrendous stories about donkeys we have collected, but this is quite a lovely story.
His elderly owners felt that at Jimmy’s age he too was getting a bit old for work (he is 25 – 30) and so they rang us to ask if we would take him. We did the usual checks and off we went to collect him.
The Donkey Sanctuary announces the tragic loss of its Founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE
Submitted by Jenifer Tucker on Thu, 12/05/2011 - 13:27
It is with deep sorrow that international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary, and its sister charity the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys, today announces the death of its founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE.
Dr Svendsen founded the charity in 1969 out of her deep love and compassion for abused, neglected and abandoned donkeys everywhere, after finding seven donkeys in a terribly poor state crammed in a small pen at Exeter market. She tried to buy the donkey in the worst condition, without success, and from that moment on, decided that she would dedicate her life to saving donkeys in distress.
Since that day over 40 years ago, through her tireless devotion and endeavour, The Donkey Sanctuary has given over 14,500 donkeys and mules in need lifelong care and love in UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. Dr Svendsen’s passionate leadership also led to the development of the charity’s work overseas, helping donkeys working in desperate conditions in some of the most impoverished communities on the planet.
Peropalo Campaign
Donkey Sanctuary (Cyprus) supports the campaign of El Refugio Del Burrito against the cruel use of a donkey in the Spanish Fiesta. You can also support El Refugio del Burrito on its campaign against the cruel use of a donkey in the Spanish Fiesta.
Transport Campaign Animals Angels
The Donkey Sanctuary (Cyprus) is supporting Animals Angels in its campaign to limit the travel time for all animals being transported for slaughter to 8 hours. We have campaigned for years to improve conditions for donkeys and mules transported for meat and we along with many other welfare organisations want to see a limit imposed.
Please click on this link www.8hours.eu and sign the petition supporting the limiting of the 8 hour transport rule.
Meet Sally... our first arrival of 2011!
On the 18th of January 2011, we had a phone call from a man asking us if we could go and pick up his father’s donkey. His father was very sick and in hospital facing many serious health problems. He was very worried about his father’s donkey as he couldn’t take care of it as he lived quite a distance away from the village, and there was no one else who could help.
