Education
Throughout the spring and early summer, schools children visit the Sanctuary to learn about donkeys. Donkeys have been a large part of Cypriot history and it is not many years ago that almost everyone had one or more donkeys. Recently we have learned that some schools are now including learning a little about donkeys as part of their History curriculum. This is wonderful news as we are not only able to explain what working donkeys have been used for but also raise awareness of animal welfare.
Apart from meeting the donkeys, they are shown pictures of long hooves, the dentists at work, the farrier trimming hooves, some of the local working donkeys and some of our rescued donkeys. We also have some donkey teeth and pieces of hoof which are always of great interest! Almost all of the schools will adopt a donkey and receive our newsletters. As a result we have had several calls from the children's parents advising us of donkeys that may need our help. Some schools have also organised fundraising events specifically for the sanctuary.
We are planning to have a portable corral made so that we can take a donkey to some schools in the future as well as producing more literature for the children.
